Geologist and former Casper College Geology Instructor Kent Sundell, Ph.D., has established a generous scholarship fund at Casper College.
The endowed scholarship fund will provide five scholarships per year, each ranging in value from $1,000 to $2,000.
“The purpose of establishing this scholarship is to financially and therefore emotionally support any students who are interested in a career in geology, while realizing that strong student backgrounds in geography, chemistry, physics, and astronomy are essential for a better understanding of geological processes on Earth and throughout the solar system,” Sundell said.
To qualify, applicants must have a minimum 2.5 GPA, be enrolled in a minimum of 12 credit hours, and major in geology, chemistry, physics, astronomy, or geography, with preference given to geology majors. Applicants do not need to be Wyoming residents.
According to Sundell, he based the scholarship’s major areas on his love of geology and the other subdisciplines of geology that he taught at Casper College. Those subdisciplines included geochemistry, geophysics, mapping, planetary geology, paleontology, geohydrology, volcanology, glaciology, caving, landslides, natural disasters, and economic geology.
