The Casper College Respiratory Therapy degree program has been awarded 10 more years of continuous accreditation from the Commission on Accreditation for Respiratory Care.
Accreditation is essential to any respiratory therapy program because respiratory therapists must graduate from an accredited program to be board-eligible to sit for the national certification exam. Only those who pass the exam are allowed to practice.
“Without this accreditation, the students would have a lot of great knowledge after the program, but wouldn’t be able to get licensed to practice. Because this requirement is so important, we are delighted to have received 10 more years,” said Grant Hosking, program director.
The accreditation process took months of preparation by Hosking and Tiffany Scott, director of clinical education. “With the help from the college, Dean for the School of Health Science at Casper College, Dino Madsen, and the health science leadership, all of our clinical affiliates, preceptors and clinical instructors, we were able to fly through the process and be one of the few schools to make it on the consent agenda for the most recent CoARC board meeting,” said Scott. “We have had tremendous support and could not be prouder,” she added.
“Tiffany and I are extremely thankful to everyone who played a part in it. The site visit alone required significant time and effort from our advisory board, clinical partners, preceptors, adjunct faculty, upper administration, our medical director, and the students. We were also fortunate to inherit a program in good standing from the previous Respiratory Therapy Program Director, Doug Neubert, which gave us a strong foundation to build upon,” noted Hosking.
“The CoARC’s accreditation review confirms that the program is in compliance with the nationally established accreditation standards. The commission commends your team’s commitment to continuous quality improvement in education, as demonstrated by your participation in programmatic accreditation,” said Thomas R. Smalling, CoARC CEO. The next comprehensive evaluation of the program, including a site visit, is scheduled to occur no later than 2035.
The mission of the CoARC is to ensure that high-quality educational programs prepare graduates to be competent respiratory therapists with proficiency in practice, education, research, and service, while protecting consumers, advancing the profession, and safeguarding educational quality.
