‘From Idea to Income: Your Path Starts Here’ Jan. 22 with Startup Survival School

Casper College is offering a free mini-event for entrepreneurs, business owners, and startup owners Thursday, Jan. 22, from 4-8 p.m.
“For those struggling to get their startup off the ground, feeling overwhelmed by the complexities of running a business or lacking the confidence or skills to get started, we want to let you know that you are not alone and Casper College is here to help,” said Makayla Ruebush, director of admissions.
This year’s Startup Survival School topic, “From Idea to Income: Your Path Starts Here,” is an informative workshop designed specifically for entrepreneurs and startup owners. The workshop will offer attendees the opportunity to learn from experienced mentors and industry experts.
Learning topics will include:
- The process for setting up payroll and reporting, and what is required to have employees
- Key software and digital tools to stay organized, get paid, and grow
- Securing your cyber presence
- Business basics, from communication to finance
Session specifics:
Check-in and registration will run from 4-4:15, followed by a welcoming and opening keynote presentation, “Lessons in Management: Thirty Years of Operating a Family Business,” by Mike Stepp, owner of Donells Candies.
Breakout sessions will follow Stepp’s presentation. Tammy Sorenson, an accounting instructor at Casper College, will lead the first session. Sorenson will walk new business owners through payroll setup, required reporting, and the key entities they must work with when hiring employees.
Session two will cover essential software and tech skills to help new businesses stay organized, efficient, and prepared to grow and will be led by Marjorie Anderson, Ed.D., Casper College business information systems instructor.
Cybersecurity expert Jeff Brewster will present “The Small Business Cyber Shield,” offering practical, easy-to-apply strategies to secure your online presence during session three. The next session will be led by Casper College business instructor Joseph Meeks, who will discuss business communication and introductory business concepts immediately valuable for small business owners.
Finally, hospitality and marketing instructor Ginny Garner’s session, “Marketing Made Simple: SEO, Websites and Social for Startups,” will provide practical, step-by-step strategies to build a conversion-ready website, improve visibility with search engine optimization, aka SEO, and use social media intentionally — leaving attendees with a clear, one-page marketing plan they can put into action immediately.
Attendees will then be treated to dinner and the closing keynote speaker, Jim Chappelow, Casper College entrepreneurship, economics, and business instructor. Chappelow will speak on “The Entrepreneurial Mindset,” exploring the thinking patterns and habits that help entrepreneurs adapt, grow, and succeed.
