Casper College presents ‘Portraits in Sound: An American Piano Story’

“Portraits in Sound: An American Piano Story” will unfold during a recital by pianist Joseph Harkins Sunday, Nov. 16, at 7 p.m. In addition, on Monday, Nov. 17, at 9 a.m., Harkins will conduct a master class. Both free events will take place in the Wheeler Concert Hall.
On Sunday, Harkins will present an all-American composers’ recital in anticipation of the 250th anniversary of the signing of the Declaration of Independence. Composers will include Joseph Lamb, Scott Joplin, George Gershwin, and Florence Price. Pieces will cover a wide range of styles.
“I bring an eclectic mix of classical, jazz, blues, and contemporary styles to my teaching and performing,” said Harkins. His teaching philosophy is based on the firm belief that everyone has pianistic and expressive musical ability.
Harkins is active as an adjudicator and presenter, and has presented nationally, regionally, and throughout the Denver metro area, with a specialty in blues and jazz instruction for elementary and intermediate pianists.
He is the author of the “Piano Topography: Mapping the Keyboard” book series. Harkins holds a Bachelor of Music degree in jazz performance from Western Michigan University and a Master of Music degree in piano performance and pedagogy from the University of Denver. He serves on the Creative Music Making Committee of the National Conference on Keyboard Pedagogy.
The Wheeler Concert Hall is located in the Music Building on the Casper College campus.
