The Tate Geological Museum at Casper College presents the February Saturday Club, where kids ages 7-14 will dig into the realm of rocks and minerals. The event will take place on Saturday, Feb. 7, from 10:30 to 11:30 a.m. at the museum.

What kids will learn

  • Which mineral will fizz if you drop acid on it
  • What kind of rock sticks to a magnet
  • How do you tell fool’s gold from the real thing?
  • And more

Russell Hawley to lead

Russell Hawley, education specialist at the Tate Geological Museum, will lead the workshop using mineral test kits and rock samples common to the Casper area.

“We will learn the intrinsic properties that characterize the different kinds of minerals and then practice using mineral test kits to tell them apart,” said Hawley, Tate Geological Museum education specialist.

According to Hawley, students will also learn to identify the rock samples and the proper way to label, store, and display rock and mineral specimens. Armed with the information from this Saturday Club, “Students can start rock and mineral collections of their own,” Hawley added.
