Next CC ‘Learning Series’ March 23 to discuss topic of property taxes

The next Casper College Community Learning Series event, scheduled for Monday, March 23, will focus on property taxes. The free session will start at 6 p.m. in the Robert and Ruth Dove Conference Center, Room 225, located in the Walter H. Nolte Gateway Center on the Casper College campus.
“Let’s Talk Property Taxes” Presentation to Feature Renée Berry
According to Andee Stewart, a Community Learning Series committee member, the event will feature Renée Berry, who has served as chief deputy with the Natrona County Assessor’s Office since 2005.
“The presentation, titled “Let’s Talk Property Taxes,” will give attendees the chance to learn how property valuation for taxes is calculated, who pays property taxes, the differences between residential and commercial properties, and variations in tax levels,” said Stewart.
If time allows, Berry will explain what a mill is and its importance. When we are assessed a mill, what is the actual dollar amount it represents for the homeowner? Furthermore, find out which mills are being assessed and for what purposes, including the current ½-mill assessment for the senior district. Review the property tax bills that have already been issued, such as the long-term homeowners’ 4% inflation cap on property valuation. What will be the long-term effects of the proposed property tax cuts on our community? Finally, does a reduction in property taxes lead to decreases in rent for those who do not own property?
About the Speaker
During her time at the Natrona County Assessor’s Office, Berry has completed over 800 hours of courses sponsored by the Wyoming Department of Revenue and the International Association of Assessing Officers. She received a 2017 certificate in Geographic Information Systems from Casper College.
Her current responsibilities include data analysis, database management, reviewing department processes, organizing the annual appeal process, testifying for the Assessor in Appeal hearings, and liaising with all other county departments and state agencies.
Mass appraisal has allowed for a universe of learning, growth, and adaptation. Berry’s passion for the job is secondary only to the satisfaction of serving her community.
