The award-winning feature documentary, “A Tale of Three Chinatowns,” will be shown on Thursday, May 2, beginning at 6 p.m. Casper College’s Andrew Young, who grew up in Boston’s Chinatown, will provide a brief pre-film discussion. The event is free and open to the public.

To enhance his talk, Young, Casper College physics instructor, began seeking additional information regarding his Boston neighborhood growing up. “In doing some research on Boston’s Chinatown, I came upon ‘A Tale of Three Chinatowns,’” said Young. Intrigued by the title, he bought the film and watched it. “I thought the documentary had tremendous value in confirming what I had already known about Boston’s Chinatown. … It fleshed out some additional history regarding the birth, growth, and current status of the Chinese enclave,” Young said.

“A Tale of Three Chinatowns” profiles Chinatowns in Washington, D.C., Chicago, and Boston and features the voices of residents, community activists, developers, government officials, and others who have a connection to this ubiquitous neighborhood, according to information provided by the film’s creators, Tiger Sisters Productions. The company noted that “’A Tale of Three Chinatowns is timely as America’s cities are experiencing a sudden change in demographics due to larger social and economic trends. As reverse ‘exoduses’ occur throughout the country with an increased number of people moving back into cities, ethnic enclaves and lower-income residents who’ve long sought these communities for social services, employment, and affordable housing are faced with grave challenges.”

The documentary will be shown in the Goodstein Foundation Library, Room 215, on the Casper College campus.

The “A Tale of Three Chinatowns” event honors Asian American and Pacific Islander Heritage Month and is organized by the Casper College Diversity and Inclusion Committee. You can go here to learn more about the diversity efforts at Casper College.
