The opportunities and challenges presented by data in materials science and engineering have expanded rapidly in the last two decades. Massive data repositories have emerged both from supercomputer-based modeling and from advanced experiments involving data-intensive measurements. Harnessing the full opportunities presented by this flood of data is going to be a persistent challenge; the next generation of scientists need training in the skills required to create, manage, and analyze these data-sets.
Integrating Computation and Experiment to Create Revolutionary Materials (ICECRM) is an REU program focusing on accelerating the development of new materials faster by harnessing the power of data and experiment. The skills developed during this REU are broadly applicable to those interested in data science and materials science, as well as anyone who will be communicating scientific information in their future roles.
Job Summary and Responsibilities:
Participants must have availability for full-time research work Monday–Friday, 9:00am-5:00pm from late May to the end of July, 2021. While the exact details of the research required vary from project to project, participants will be expected to give updates on their research and participate in sessions for developing skills in machine learning, data science, and public speaking.
No experience in programming, materials science, or research is required.
Students must be undergraduates and US citizens or permanent residents.
