TICKETS ON SALE FOR CASPER COLLEGE SUMMER MUSICAL “GYPSY”

Tickets are now on sale for the Casper College Theatre and Dance Department’s summer musical “Gypsy.”

“Gypsy” is the story of the ultimate stage mother and her two daughters. Based on the book “Gypsy: A Memoir” by Gypsy Rose Lee, the musical features many well-known songs written by Jule Styne and Stephen Sondheim including “Everything's Coming up Roses” and “Let Me Entertain You.”

A favorite of critics and theatregoers alike, the musical debuted on Broadway in 1959 with Ethel Merman in the powerhouse role of Mama Rose, which earned her a Tony nomination for outstanding actress in a musical. Since then, the musical has been revived a number of times resulting in Tony wins for Angela Lansbury (1974), Tyne Daly (1989) and Patti LuPone (2008), and a nomination for Bernadette Peters (2003) and an Emmy nomination for Bette Midler (1994).

“Just as our leading actresses all want to have a run at playing Mama Rose, most directors want to have the chance to bring this quintessential Broadway fable to life. It has a great, true story, characters with great depth, memorable songs and dances, and children and animals, (one lamb and one dog). What an exciting night in the theatre,” said Douglas Garland, director.

“Gypsy” will be performed on the McMurry Mainstage of the Gertrude Krampert Theatre Complex July 13 and 14, 18 through 21, and 25 through 29. All performances begin at 7:30 p.m., except for the Sunday matinee, which will begin at 2 p.m. Tickets are $12 for adults and $10 for students ages 5 to 18. Tickets can be purchased at the box office between 10 a.m. and 3 p.m. Monday through Friday, by phone at 307-268-2500, or one hour before each performance, for that performance only.

GUNNARE RELOADS FOR ANOTHER RUN AT THE NATIONAL TOURNAMENT

It didn’t take very long for Dwight Gunnare to go right back to work. Not long after his Casper College Lady Thunderbirds fell short of a championship three-peat, Dwight Gunnare was back on the telephone getting ready for next year’s basketball season.

Gunnare can’t wait, but he also can’t help but glance over his shoulder too. Not many teams win 30 basketball games in a season, which the ’11-’12 Lady T-Birds did before losing in the semi-finals of the Region IX tournament. The primary goal for Gunnare’s program, however, is to hang red banners (which Casper has done two of the four years Gunnare has coached here). To accomplish so much, to be ranked among the nation’s Top 10 and then not win the big prize “leaves an empty feeling,” Gunnare says.

The T-Birds have averaged 25-plus wins per year under his leadership so it will come as no surprise that Gunnare says he is ready for another run. He likens a new team to a Christmas package under the tree; he can’t wait to open it.

On paper, the T-Bird newcomers are talented. They bring size inside and they bring floor skills and long-range arsenal to the perimeter.

“I believe we have added talent at every position,” Gunnare says. “Our recruiting goal is always to sign players who can start. That way you are never rebuilding, you are just reshuffling.”

For the first time in three seasons the T-Birds will have a new face at point guard. All-American Rosalie Cutri (Australia) will take her talents to Boise State next season. Bailey Holland (Denver) and Shelby Garzka (Casper) are back, though, and played a lot of minutes there. Gunnare expects a smooth transition.

Shelby Stewart (Glenrock, Wyo.) and Taylor Diehl (Casper) return this fall at the two-guard position and both are legitimate preseason All-Region IX players.

Gunnare has talent coming right behind those four sophomores. Aaliyah Dunbar, the sister of Jerrold Brooks (who played for the T-Birds last season) is a four-time player of the year in her Rochester, N.Y. league and Kendal Levine, from Stanbury, Utah, was a three-year starter at point guard. That gives Casper a lot of options at point guard. At the two guard Gunnare has signed Ragen Wilson (Laramie, Wyo.), Meghan Becker (Mullen High School, Denver) and Kaylee Swope (Miles City, Mont.). Wilson helped lead Laramie to the 4A state championship in March. Becker is a scorer and Swope was a three-year high school starter.

Gunnare has recruited more size and more depth on the front line than he had a year ago. Fayne Tyson (Laramie. Wyo.) returns at power forward. Newcomers down low include Marlena Muszak, a 6-3 post (Poland), and Whitney Lott, a 6-1 post (Cottonwood Heights, Utah). Cheyanne Balster, a 6-foot post/forward from Casper Natrona, can play the four or the five.

“The post is where I’m most excited,” Gunnare says. “I really believe we upgraded there. On paper we could throw five freshmen out there and compete. Fortunately we do not have to do that. We are excited.”

That’s great news for T-Bird fans and tough news for Region IX opponents.

TWO-DAY OLLI MOUNTAIN TRIP LOOKS AT EADSVILLE AND ECOLOGY

The Osher Lifelong Learning Institute (OLLI) at Casper College is offering a trip to the Casper Mountain Science School, which will include hiking to Eadsville and sleeping in a yurt.

“OLLI Science Camp” will take place on September 6 and 7 and will feature two days and one night at Camp Sacajawea. “This camp will allow those participating to relive the summer camp days of their youth,” said Vicki Pollock, lifelong learning specialist at Casper College.

“Everyone attending will learn about forest ecology, local history, and more as we hike to the historic town site at Eadsville, look at old mining sites, and talk about the trees, water, and wildlife habitats of the area. As at summer camp, the sleeping arrangements will be women in one yurt, men in another,” Pollock added.

The cost of the trip is $145 per person and includes transportation to the camp, lodging, and meals. There will also be free time to hike, relax on the deck, and enjoy the “great end of summer weather of Wyoming,” according to Pollock.

Space for the trip is limited and a nonrefundable deposit of $50 is required by Tuesday, August 14, with final payment due on Tuesday, August 28. For more information or to sign up, contact Pollock at 268-2097 or Karen Arnold, lifelong learning specialist, at 268-2099.
