WINTER CONCERT FEATURES HOLIDAY TUNES AND REQUESTS

The Casper College Concert Band will present its annual Winter Concert on Saturday, Dec. 10 at 3 p.m. in Durham Recital Hall.

According to Douglas Bull, brass instructor and band director, selections this year have been taken from the “many requests that we have had from the community and students.”

“Selections include Leroy Anderson's ‘Christmas Festival,’ a fanciful setting of ‘Jingle Bells’ by Jay Dawson, a moving arrangement of ‘Silent Night,’ and ‘March Of The Toy Soldiers’ from Victor Herbert's ‘Toyland.’ It should an afternoon of seasonal enjoyment culminating in the audience being filled with the spirit if the season,” said Bull.

Several other Casper College groups will also provide seasonal music during the Winter Concert, including the brass, flute, jazz, and percussion ensembles.

The Winter Concert is free and open to the public. Durham Recital Hall is located in the Aley Fine Arts Center.

CASPER COLLEGE SPANISH CLUB HOLDS FOUR-DAY BAKE SALE

The Casper College Spanish Club will be holding a four-day bake sale beginning December 5 to raise money to help students traveling to Oaxaca, Mexico during the spring 2012 semester.

According to Amalia Vasquez, Casper College student and bake sale organizer, the sale will feature breads, cupcakes, cookies, and other treats.

The four-day bake sale will run Monday, Dec. 5 through Thursday, Dec. 8 from 8:30 to 10:30 a.m. in the Doornbos Student Lounge, located in Liesinger Hall (former administration building) on the Casper College campus.

COURSE IN ENVIRONMENTAL ECONOMICS OFFERED FOR SPRING 2012

A three-credit course in environmental economics, ECON 2400 “Environmental Economics” will be offered during the spring 2012 semester at Casper College.

The course, taught by Tom Schellberg, Casper College economics instructor, will answer such questions as: “Why does the free market produce such dirty air? How do we manage our natural resources, and deal with potential problems such as global warming? Should we continue to use our coal, oil, and gas, or should we develop alternative energy sources, such as wind, solar, geothermal, and nuclear power? These and other environmental and resource problems will be dealt with in this course,” said Schellberg.

The course counts as a social science elective, and also satisfies a requirement for the economics major. To be eligible to enroll, students must have had either ECON 1010 “Principles of Macroeconomics” or ECON 1020 “Principles of Microeconomics.” The class will be held on Monday and Wednesday evenings from 5:30 to 6:45. TWO-WEEK IMMERSION COURSE IN OAXACA, MEXICO OFFERED

The Casper College World Languages Department has 12 openings for a trip to Oaxaca, Mexico May 19 through June 1, 2012 for a two-week Spanish-language immersion trip.

“This trip is for anyone who wants to learn that street Spanish they won’t find in any textbook,” said Eric Atkins, world languages instructor at Casper College. “We will spend two weeks completely immersed in Spanish language. In addition, we will explore the Oaxacan culture, and sample delicious food in the charming, colonial city of Oaxaca, Mexico.”

Students will take classes at Casper College's sister college, Universidad Regional del Sureste (URSE) in Oaxaca. Atkins noted that anyone is welcome who has completed SPAN 1010 with a "C" or better, enrolls in SPAN 2410 for the spring 2012 semester, and who is at least 18 years old by January 1, 2012.

A deposit of $400 is due by Friday, Jan. 13, 2012. The trip is estimated to cost $2100 and includes round-trip airfare from Casper to Oaxaca, accommodations and breakfast, tuition for the three-credit Casper College class SPAN 2420 “Travel to Mexico: Oaxaca,” and tuition and materials at URSE.

DECEMBER GREEN LECTURE FOCUSES ON CASPER’S SUSTAINABILITY PLAN

The December Green Lecture at Casper College will feature Gary Clough, public services director for the city of Casper. Presented by the Center for Training and Development at Casper College, the lecture will take place on Thursday, Dec. 15 beginning at 6:30 p.m. in the Gateway Building, Room 225A.

“The City of Casper’s Sustainability Plan” will look at how the city of Casper is conserving energy and contributing to a greener community, according to Sarah Olson, workforce-training specialist. “Gary will describe how the city has implemented several plans that are effectively saving money without large upfront investments. He will also present an overview of Casper’s sustainability plan and the savings that have resulted from that plan,” said Olson. “This presentation is a must for any citizen interested in knowing what the city of Casper is doing for the ecology of our community,” she added.

The lecture is free and open to the public and is part of Casper College’s Green Outreach Project, which, in addition to the lecture series, includes training sessions for those involved in the building trades.

The Green Outreach Project is sponsored by Casper College, the Casper Area Economic Development Alliance, Inc., and is also made possible through a grant from the Wyoming Workforce Development Council and the U.S. Department of Labor.

HOLIDAY HOURS SET FOR TATE AND WERNER MUSEUMS

The Casper College Tate Geological and Werner Wildlife museums will be open over the college’s holiday break, Dec. 23, 2011 through January 1, 2012.

The Werner Wildlife Museum will be open Monday through Friday from 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m., and the Tate Geological Museum will be open from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. during the week and from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Saturdays, except for December 24 and 31.

“It is a great time to bring out-of-town family and friends for a visit to both the Tate and the Werner museum. Both are free and kid friendly and provide a great learning experience for kids and adults alike,” said Deanna Schaff, museum director at Casper College.

HEALTH SERVICES INVITED TO PARTICIPATE IN HEALTH PROFESSIONS FAIR

All health service providers from Casper, the state of Wyoming, and the region are invited to participate in Casper College’s Annual Health Professions Career Fair on Friday, February 3, 2012 on the Casper College campus.

“Because Casper College and its partner institutions offer more than a dozen quality educational programs with certificates or degrees, this is a tremendous opportunity to recruit qualified employees,” said Janet de Vries, Casper College Career Services director. “Prospective college graduates, alumni, high school students, and the general public are invited to the fair to learn about current and future job opportunities,” she added.

ALUMNI ASSOCIATION ANNOUNCES SCHOLARSHIP WINNERS

The Casper College Alumni Association has announced the recipients for the 2011-2012 Outstanding Student Scholarship. Two nontraditional-aged students and one traditional-aged student were each awarded $2,000 to be divided equally between the fall and spring semesters.

Lisa Bickels, a nursing major at Casper College, served four years with the U.S. Marine Corps. Following the Corps, Bickels continued as a reservist, which “allowed me to pursue a career in the health and fitness industry as a licensed nutritionist and exercise specialist. I believe my pursuit into nursing is the next step in a rewarding career of assisting others,” she said.

Kristina Dickinson is an elementary education major. Upon her graduation from Casper College Dickinson plans to transfer to the University of Wyoming/Casper College Center to pursue her bachelor’s degree in elementary education. “I have always dreamed of becoming a teacher because I truly believe that good teachers are the backbone of a strong society. This scholarship will allow me to be more focused on my education and take it to the next level,” Dickinson noted.

Danielle Hockett is a 2003 graduate of Newcastle High School and a vocal performance and music education major at Casper College. Following her graduation from Casper College, Hockett plans to “further my education by earning both a bachelor’s and master’s degree in voice performance and music education. I hope to inspire the next generation to learn to grow a profound love of music, which I have felt for many years.”

The Alumni Association Outstanding Student Scholarship recognizes high academic achievement, leadership qualities and community involvement, with academic achievement the highest selection criterion for the scholarship. Financial need is also taken into consideration.

SANTA FE OPERA TRIP SEEKS PARTICIPANTS

The Osher Lifelong Learning Institute at Casper College is currently taking reservations for a trip to the Santa Fe Opera House in July 2012.

“We are headed back to the Santa Fe Opera this summer to see two operas,” said Vicki Pollock, lifelong learning specialist at Casper College.

Participants will attend the performances of “The Pearl Fishers” by Georges Bizet and “Tosca” by Giacomo Puccini. In addition to the two operas, the five-day trip will include four nights at the Hotel Santa Fe in Santa Fe, N.M. and one night on the return home at the Antlers Hilton in Colorado Springs, Colo.

“This trip is going to feature some great food, great lectures about the operas, and fun with fellow OLLIs,” said Pollock.

STUDENTS DONATE $2500 TO CASPER HUMANE SOCIETY

Casper Humane Society Board President Sally Reinhart gladly accepted a check for $2500 from members of the Casper College Small Group Communications class. The class raised the funds for the CHS from its recently held “Murder Mystery Dinner.” The students decided to raise money for the CHS for the serve project portion of their class. DIGITAL PHOTOGRAPHY OFFERED IN NIGHT CLASS

If you are like most people with a digital camera you have some great photos on your computer that you would like to turn into prints, but just don't know how. It may be easier than you think, with the help of a digital photography class being offered for the spring semester at Casper College.

"Electronic Digital Photo" (ELTR 2145 01) will include the basic techniques of digital photography and an overview of what is needed to acquire, store, retouch, and print digital and hybrid photographs.

Miles Hecker, digital photography professional, will teach the class on Tuesday nights from 6 to 9. According to Hecker, students will learn the fundamentals of digital photography, how to make quality prints on their inkjet printer, how to scan their old slides and negatives, and how to master Adobe Photoshop CS skills to create better photos.

BUSINESS FINANCIAL PROBLEMS HELPED WITH CC COURSE

Designed to review basic mathematics skills and build a proficiency in the operation of electronic calculators, "Business Mathematics I" (BADM 1005 01), will be offered over the noon hour during the 2012 spring semester.

"The mathematic and operation skills that students learn in this class will then be applied to practical business problems in bank services, payroll, taxes, risk management, mark-up, discount, depreciation, financial analysis, and simple and compound interest," said Liz Ott, instructor.

PHYSICS CLASSES OFFERED FOR NONMAJORS

Two physics classes, "Concepts of Physics" (PHYS 1050 01) and "General Physics" (PHYS 1110 01) are being offered for the spring 2012 semester at Casper College.

According to Paul Marquard, instructor, "Concept of Physics" is "a one semester course for those students whose degree requirements call for an introduction to elementary physical concepts."

"General Physics," on the other hand is "designed for liberal arts, pre-medical, pre-dental, pre-law, and vocational and technical students," Marquard noted. "This is a nonmathematical class, so there will be less emphasis on derivations of formulas and more emphasis on the social significance of science and its applications to everyday life," he said.

WILDERNESS MEDICINE INSTITUTE OFFERED IN FEBRUARY AT COLLEGE

The Casper College Center for Training and Development is offering the three-day "Wilderness Medicine Institute" (CEU 0402 60) Friday, Feb. 10 from 1 to 5 p.m. and Saturday and Sunday, Feb. 11 and 12 from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. each day at the Casper Mountain Science School.

"Whether spending time in the backcountry is a person's passion or their profession, they should never have to ask, 'What do I do now,'" said Ann Dalton, workforce training specialist.

According to Dalton, the WMI is a "fast-paced, hands-on class for trip leaders, camp staff, outdoor enthusiasts, and people who spend time in remote locations."

The WMI will cover a wide range of wilderness medicine topics including advanced topics that other programs leave out such as dislocation reduction, focused spinal assessment, and epinephrine administration, said Dalton. "Students will gain the knowledge, skills, and ability to make sound decisions in an emergency."

The class will be taught by personnel from the National Outdoor Leadership School and is approved by the American Camping Association and the U.S. Forest Service. The cost of the class is $340 per person and includes CPR training and room and board.

OLLI TO HOST FIFTH ANNUAL BURNS DINNER

The Osher Lifelong Learning Institute (OLLI) at Casper College will host the Fourth Annual Burns Dinner on Friday, Feb. 3 at 6 p.m. at the Wolcott Galleria.

The evening will feature traditional Scottish haggis, neaps (mashed turnips) and tatties (mashed potatoes), along with a catered dinner, according to Vicki Pollock, lifelong learning specialist.

“In addition to the dinner, the evening will be filled with merriment, music and laughter in celebration of the Scottish poet Robert Burns,” said Pollock. “Because this dinner is based on those held annually in Scotland to honor Burns, there will be recitations of poems written by Burns and others, a toast to the haggis and more,” she added.

According to Pollock, hors d’ oeuvres and wine will begin at 5:45 p.m. and dinner at 6:30 p.m. The Scottish dinner is open to those 21 and older, and participants do not need to be a member of OLLI to attend. Seating is limited and the cost per person is $45. “We are encouraging everyone to feel free to wear their Scottish attire, present a toast, and learn how to dance like the Scots do,” said Pollock.

Tickets are currently on sale through Friday, Jan. 23, 2012 for the traditional Scottish dinner and entertainment. For more information or to make reservations, call Pollock at 268-2097.

NEW CLASS LOOKS AT ENTERTAINMENT MANAGEMENT

A new class for the spring semester at Casper College will teach participants how to manage entertainment venues. “Topics: Introduction to Entertainment Management,” (BADM 2490/THEA2490) will be taught by Joe Simon, Casper College business instructor.

The three-credit class will run from 9:30 to 10:45 a.m. on both Tuesdays and Thursdays. The class, which can count toward the cultural environment requirement for graduation, will provide students with insights into the many facets of entertainment management. Those currently working with or managing local theatre groups, nightclubs, and other entertainment venues, and those planning to become involved in entertainment management will find the class informative and helpful.

OLLI HOSTS “SPRING FLING” JANUARY 28

The Osher Lifelong Learning Institute (OLLI) at Casper College will host a “Spring Fling” sign-up event on Saturday, Jan. 28 from 9 to 11 a.m. on the second floor of the Gateway Building on the Casper College Campus.

Those attending will also be able to renew their OLLI membership where they can purchase either a spring membership or a yearlong membership that will run from January to December 2012. “The fee for the 2012 spring session is $35 or only $55 for the entire year – spring, summer and fall,” said Vicki Pollock lifelong learning specialist.

Some of the classes to be offered for the spring session include “And the Nominees are …” – three different film classes that will each explore the best picture nominees from 1934, 1940, and 1943 respectively, “Building a Bond with Your Grandchildren Through Reading,” “Exploring the Holocaust IV: Women and the Holocaust,” “How the Bible Came to Be: A Brief History of the Canonization of Christian Holy Scripture,” “A History of Mysteries: Agatha Christie,” “The Role of Food in Amish Culture,” “Too Many Extra Virgins: Choosing the Right Olive Oil,” “World War II: Part One,” “Social Networking for Seniors,” and many more.
