Welcome to Learning Communities

Learning Communities were officially established at Casper College in Fall 2006, following a pilot program in Spring 2006, which paired Basic Writing I (ENGL 0600) and Pre-Algebra Arithmetic (MATH 0900). This community is in its second semester, and more advanced classes are in place combining English Writing II (ENGL 0610) and Elementary Algebra (MATH 0920). Learning communities draw upon a long-term philosophy among faculty which has emphasized the value of collaboration.

Learning Communities offer a "cohort" of students opportunities to enroll in varied classes as a unified group, work with two or more instructors in varied fields in a shared space and time dimension, and to deeply further their learning. Instructors overlap their offerings and co-teach in their areas of expertise. Students develop peer connections which afford them mutual support, the possibilities to form "study groups," and a comfortable system for contacting one another and their instructors.

Those interested in a thorough understanding of learning communities and their history should contact
